Group Project Ideas

1. Cinematic Sound and Score Exhibition

Create an original soundtrack for a short film or a series of animated scenes. Your team could work with film students or animators to design soundscapes, musical themes, and sound effects that enhance the visual narrative. Consider including modern and immersive elements, such as spatial sound, to bring the scenes to life in a three-dimensional auditory experience.

2. Live Sound and Technology for Dance or Theater

Work with a dance or theater group to design a live sound system and original music for a performance. Experiment with reactive sound elements, where the music and effects change in response to the movements of the performers, creating an interactive experience. This could highlight the role of sound in enhancing emotional expression in live performances.

3. Interactive Sound for a Video Game Prototype

Work with game design students to create an audio experience for a video game demo. Focus on adaptive music and sound effects that dynamically respond to player actions or game environments, using software like Wwise or FMOD. You could present this project as a live demo, allowing the audience to experience the sound changes in the game in real time.

4. Urban RnB EP with Visual Art Integration

Given your background in urban RnB, your team could create a short EP and combine each track with visual art—perhaps animation, digital art, or even a live art performance. This combination of music and visual storytelling will allow you to demonstrate how music production and art can complement and enhance each other.

5. Immersive Sound Installation for an Art Exhibition

Set up a sound installation in a gallery or exhibition space, using binaural or amphiphonic sound design to create an immersive experience. The project could include soundscapes or ambient music that changes as people move through the space, emphasizing the connection between spatial acoustics and visual art.

6. Virtual Concert and Event Promotion

Organize a virtual concert that showcases multiple student groups. Your team could be responsible for planning, preparing, and promoting this event, incorporating live streaming technologies and a virtual stage. This project would combine music production with event management, giving you hands-on experience in both areas.

"Immersive Soundscapes: Cinematic Sound Design and Music for Film"

Project Duration : 15 -20mins

This project focuses on creating an experience that enhances the narrative, mood and emotional depth of a film production. The goal is to learn the interaction of sound with the accompaniment of images that alternate in the video through the spotting that had to be carried out. The music should accompany the narration of the story of the script and be fully synchronized with the development of the plot. The composition should present a contemporary musical style and include elements of synthetic and analog sound, using VSTi instruments combined with natural instruments. During the film, the music should present a gradual evolution that follows the flow of the script and the scenes. This development should accompany the increase in intensity and change in the mood of the story, using build-up and progression. Foleys should be created in collaboration with your classmates in small groups, and the use of sound effects from libraries is essential. The sound should be in perfect synchronization with the moving image. It will include the following:

- Contact the Artist

I reached out to an artist I know and told him about our project and how we would like to incorporate his work. I asked him about the themes he typically focuses on and he mentioned that he often creates pieces inspired by Ancient Greece and nature. He also offered to send some samples so we could choose which ones would best fit our vision. (The artist is the same person who played the piano and composed the songs at my album (Alter)-Ego) > https://www.instagram.com/char_bouchar?utm_source=ig_web_button_share_sheet&igsh=ZDNlZDc0MzIxNw==

The poll and the results:

The final decision of the group is to make 8 works of art.

Thursday, November 7, 2024

We had a group meeting to decide how we will work on the group project. We made some decisions and a plan to follow.

1. Division of the artworks

Archontia : 8, 12

Sofia : 1, 13

Anna : 16, 11

Maria : 2, 5

I sent a message to the artist and asked him for the name of his work and I am waiting for his response. (The above numbering is based on the way we numbered the work within the group, it is temporary)

2. Time and Scheduling

We agreed that the project should be done before Christmas around December 19-20 and to leave a few days to do a general check on everything until December 25. Also, by next week the interview with the artist should be done so that we can start creating the music and sound.

Task 1

Artist interview and recording by Sunday 11/17

Official deadline

Personal work: December 19-20

Final check: December 25

3. Additionally

We agreed to have 2 folders, one will be personal and the other a group folder where we will share our files with each other.

- I contacted the artist again and told him that we wanted an interview for each painting and he agreed, now all that remains is to close the studio and have the titles of the works.

Tuesday, 19 November 2024

Today we had the meeting for the artist interview in room E5. My team and I went early to set up the place and do some microphone tests to decide which one to record with. The microphones we tried were:

  • Behringer C-1

  • Rhode nt1 A

After some tests we decided to use the Behringer C-1, the whole process took about 1 hour. The equipment we used was as follows:

  • Microphone: Behringer C-1

  • Monitors: Headphones > Beyerdynamic DT-770 and Steinberg UR2C

  • Desktop microphone stand

When the artist arrived we immediately started the interview. We asked general questions about his art and the sources of his inspiration and then moved on to more specific ones for each painting we chose for this project. Each of us asked the artist questions. The entire recording took 2 hours and we exported the files and shared them with each other.

Creating a Presentation with Sound Effects for an Artistic Work

- Objective: Present a work with sound effects and photographs with corresponding images and narration.

Collaboration: Selection of a painter who will provide 8-10 ready-made paintings with a theme.

Our project bridges the worlds of visual art, music and interactive storytelling. Inspired by eight carefully selected paintings, we will create original music and soundscapes that reflect their essence and emotions. The final experience will take the form of an immersive puzzle game, inviting participants to connect each acoustic creation to the painting. By scanning QR codes, players will have access to the music and sound design, and upon completing the puzzle, a unique QR code will unlock bonus content, including individual excerpts, interviews, and full sound compositions. This project transforms art into a multi-sensory journey, merging creativity with interactivity.

Project change: Instead of focusing on a single artist with a fixed theme, we need to find 9 different artists, so that each one presents different techniques and distinct themes by Monday.

I contacted some friends who study at GAFA (Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts) but most of them refused to cooperate and the few who agreed were not ultimately selected by the group. Apart from them and the previous artist, I don't know anyone else, so my personal research ends here.

Today we decided on the paintings on which we will create the soundscapes. Then we found a photographer and created a contract for the painters and the photographer.

Finally we decided on the title for the project which is "Soundscapes".

Change of Project: To simplify the process of selecting artists for the project, we decided to focus on paintings by well-known painters from various periods and countries. As of 24/11/2024, we have retained only one artwork from our initial selection. This piece stood out because it was digital and featured a futuristic style.

The last 9 artworks are:

  • Bathers at Bellport by William James Glackens

  • New York Cinema by Edward Hopper

  • Cafeterras by Vincent van Gogh

  • Lower Church by Giotto di Bondone

  • Odu Women by Ben Enwonwu

  • Midsummer Dance by Anders Zorn

  • Seated Sailor by Yiannis Tsarouchis

  • The Swing by Jean-Honoré Fragonard

  • Watching (the digital artwork) by https://www.instagram.com/shizumar?igsh=MXMybXk3NDlmY3U0aA==

We also started discussing how the puzzle game would be set up.

ONEDRIVE evidence for puzzle :

We agreed to do Soundscape for Watching and any other painting we want. So I decided to do a general research for each painting and decide which elements I should express through soundscapes.

For Watching I drew inspiration from techno artists and songs. For the music I decided to make a musical collage of different songs. The ones I chose are:

  • To Nirvana

DPR ARTIC

  • Savage (Instrumental)

DPR CREAM

  • Yellow Cab

DPR LIVE

  • Kiss Me

DPR LIVE

  • Limbo

DPR IAN

  • Saint

DPR IAN

I initially cut and mixed the songs To Nirvana and Savage in Reaper to change their original structures.

Evidence :

After I was done, I exported the WAV file, put it in Ableton and started to build it with the other songs. In the meantime, I looked for different sci-fi sounds that could liven up the soundscape and better describe the artwork. I found robotic voices, futuristic soundscapes, sounds from planets and I put everything together so that they all fit together beautifully.

Evidence

I emphasized each sound with different effects, such as EQ Eight (Channel 2,9,10,11,12,15), Erosion (Channel 5) because it adds noise or distortion to the sound to create a lo-fi character to the sound, Modulator (Channel 5) to create a movement and evolution in the sound and create a dynamic soundscape, Phaser-Flanger (Channel 5) to add depth and movement to the sound and create a sense of space and movement, Reverb (Channel 6,11) to add reflections and create a sense of atmosphere, Echo (Channel 6,11) to create atmospheric and rhythmic repeats of the sound, Delay (Channel 7,15) to fill in some gaps and create a sense of space in the mix, Limiter (Channel 1,5,9,10,11,13,15, Master) to increase or decrease the sound levels in each track and in the Master. In the meantime I mixed the sounds, deciding which one I wanted lower or higher based on my personal preferences and the quality of the equipment I have available. For the last time I exported the main track to WAV and uploaded my work to the folder on OneDrive.

The next soundscape I decided to create was for the painting The Swing. I did a search to get some inspiration from artists and music from that period. I looked up classical musicians to get some ideas for how I wanted to approach the painting. I tried the song Pollux by S.A. Karl keeping the piano sound but changing its texture through effects. I added some additional instruments like viola and piccolo with midi and added soundscape elements, like the sounds of the forest, and sound design elements, like the sound of the swing. The goal was to create a very ethereal almost dreamlike atmosphere.

ONEDRIVE evidence :

I accentuated each sound with different effects such as EQ Eight (Channel 1,3,4,6,7,8,9,10,11), Modulation Pan (Channel 8) to add a movement and evolve textures to the sounds and create a dynamic soundscape, Reverb (Channel 1,2,3,4,5,9,10) to add reflections and create a sense of atmosphere, Limiter (Channel 1,8,10, Master) to increase or decrease the sound levels in each track and Master. In the meantime I mixed the sounds, deciding which one I wanted lower or higher based on my personal preferences and the quality of the equipment I have available. For the last time I exported the master track to WAV and uploaded my work to the folder on OneDrive.

Today I decided to create the soundscape of 2 more paintings, Bathers at Bellport and Seated Sailor.

Starting with Bathers at Bellport, I decided to do a general research for this artwork and decided which elements I should express through soundscape. Even though the painting is from the 1930s, I decided to create a more atmospheric and atmospheric soundtrack. I tried the song "Chemtrails Over The Country Club" by Lana Del Rey. I took only the piano of the song and then through effects I changed the structure of the original song, added some additional instruments and soundscape. I added soundscape elements, such as the sounds of the sea, and to the sound design, such as the sound of sails. The goal was to create a very free and open atmosphere.

ONEDRIVE evidence :

I emphasized each sound with different effects such as EQ Eight (Channel 2,3,4,5), Modulation Pan (Channel 2,4,5) to add a movement and evolve textures to the sounds and create a dynamic soundscape, Echo (Channel 6) to create atmospheric and rhythmic repetitions of the sound, Limiter (Channel 4,5, Master) to increase or decrease the sound levels on each track and on the Master. Meanwhile I mixed the sounds, deciding which one I wanted lower or higher based on my personal preferences and the quality of the equipment I had available. Finally I exported the main track to WAV and uploaded my work to the folder on OneDrive.

The next painting I chose to do was Seated Sailor. Again, I did a general research on the artwork to get a better idea of the elements I need to express through the soundscapes. The painting is by a Greek artist, the sailor is sitting in a cafe in Greece looking out, so I chose to present his environment with the sounds of people talking, the sea and the atmosphere of the street. As for the music, I didn't make it myself, I looked for songs that have bouzouki and ended up choosing the instrumental version of the bouzouki from the song "Aponi Zoi". The goal was to make it clear that this is a Greek environment and anyone looking at the painting can tell that the soundscape matches the art.

ONEDRIVE evidence :

I emphasized each sound with different effects such as EQ Eight (Channel 2,3,4,6), Modulation Pan (Channel 3,4) to add a movement and evolve textures to the sounds and create a dynamic soundscape, Limiter (Channel 3,5 ,7, Master) to increase or decrease the sound levels in each track and in the Master. In the meantime I mixed the sounds, deciding which one I wanted lower or higher based on my personal preferences and the quality of the equipment I have available. For the last time I exported the main track to WAV and uploaded my work to the folder on OneDrive.

Today I decided to create the soundscape of the New York Cinema and the Lower Church.

Starting with the New York Cinema, I decided to do a general research for this artwork and decided which elements I should express through soundscapes. The painting is set around the 1930s, so the soundscape and music are inspired by that period. Regarding the sound design, I chose the American film "Gone With The Wind" to play in the background to show that it is a cinema and I added people talking and reacting to certain scenes. Regarding the music, I chose some Jazz songs from that period, such as "For Heaven's Shake" and "Autumn Leaves" by Phil Harper ft. Massimo Faraò Trio.

ONEDRIVE evidence:

I emphasized each sound with different effects such as EQ Eight (Channel 1,2,3,5,6,15), Distortion (Channel 1) to add noise to the sound and create and add a vintage character for the film, Cabinet (Channel 2,3,4,5,6) to mimic speaker or room settings and make the sound more natural and realistic, Reverb (Channel 1) to add reflections and create a sense of atmosphere, Limiter (Channel 1,6,7,8, Master) to increase or decrease the sound levels in each track and in the Master. In the meantime I mixed the sounds, deciding which one I wanted lower or higher based on my personal preferences and the quality of the equipment I have available. For the last time I exported the main track to WAV and uploaded my work to the folder on OneDrive.

The next soundscape I decided to create was for the painting Lower Church. I did a search to get some inspiration from artists and music from that period. Since the artwork is an Italian Catholic Christian painting, I searched for church songs from the Middle Ages to get some ideas for how I want to approach the painting. I chose the Italian song Cuncil Simus Concanentes (Virolai) to accurately identify the time period and country. I added soundscape elements, such as the sounds of nightlife and women talking, and sound design, such as the sound of a baby crying, goats, sheep, donkeys, etc. The goal was to describe the painting as much as possible.

ONEDRIVE evidence:

I accentuated each sound with different effects such as EQ Eight (Channel 2,3,4,5), Pan Modulation (Channel 3,4) to add a movement, evolve the sounds and create a dynamic soundscape, Limiter (Master Channel) to increase or decrease the sound levels in each track and in the Master. In the meantime I mixed the sounds, deciding which one I wanted lower or higher based on my personal preferences and the quality of the equipment I have available. Today I decided to create the soundscape for the painting Odu Women.

I decided to do some general research for this artwork and decided what elements I should express through soundscapes. Even though the painting is about Africa and its people and even though I am not really familiar with their culture and the sounds they have, I tried to make it as less stereotypical as possible and decided to focus more on the environment. I chose a traditional African song to locate the country. I added some additional soundscape elements, such as the sounds of the night forest, the women talking and the atmosphere of the market, and sound design, such as the sound of elephants and footsteps. The goal was to describe the painting as much as possible.

ONEDRIVE Evidence

I accentuated each sound with different effects such as EQ Eight (Channel 2,3,4,5,6,7), Modulation Pan (Channel 5,6) to add a movement, evolve the sounds and create a dynamic soundscape, Reverb (Channel 7) to add reflections and create a sense of atmosphere, Echo (Channel 6) to create atmospheric and rhythmic repetitions of the sound, Limiter (Master) to increase or decrease the sound levels in each track and in the Master. Today I decided to create the soundscape for the painting Midsummer Dance.

I decided to do some general research for this artwork and decided what elements I should express through soundscapes. Even though the painting is about a Swedish celebration that happens during the summer and I am not really familiar with their culture or music, I tried to make it as close as possible to the image that the research gave me and decided to focus more on the environment. I chose a traditional Swedish song to play in the background from the time the painting was made to identify the country. I added some additional soundscape elements, such as the sounds of people talking and the afternoon environment around them, and sound design, such as the sound of the crowd making small reactions. The goal was to describe the painting as much as possible.

ONEDRIVE evidence :

I emphasized each sound with different effects such as EQ Eight (Channel 3,4,5,6), Modulation Pan (Channel 6) to create a movement and evolution in the sound and create a dynamic soundscape, Reverb (Channel 2,3) to add reflections and create a sense of atmosphere, Echo (Channel 2,11) to create atmospheric and rhythmic repetitions of the sound, Limiter (Channel Master) either to push the sound levels on each track and the Master. Meanwhile I was mixing the sounds, deciding which one I wanted lower or higher based on my personal preference and the quality of the equipment I had available. Today we had a team meeting to do the mixing and mastering. We took the multitrack and stems and imported them into Reaper. We grouped the sounds and then started the mixing process. We completed the final mix using the Tukan pluggin, ensuring that any member of the team could easily adjust the mix settings if needed. Our main focus was leveling, as each person had mixed their tracks based on their personal knowledge and aesthetic preferences. This resulted in significant variations in the levels of the final soundscapes, which we carefully balanced to create a cohesive listening experience.

Today we visited the Michael Cacoyannis Foundation to organize our project. We prepared the space, placing instruction sheets at the entrance and arranged the nine boards printed on model paper. Each board was numbered and we placed them in an aesthetic that we thought would fit the wall. The magnetic board was organized into three rows: numbers, titles and QR codes. A small zipped folder containing QR codes and titles was placed nearby for easy use by visitors during the interactive game. The board underneath included the QR code with answers for participants to verify their results. We ensured that everything was ready for the next day’s event.
